As another week rolls around in the world of Android gaming, developers seem to be taking the platform more seriously. For example, mobile gaming giant Gameloft seems to be releasing several games a week, and is finally allowing its games to be distributed through the Android Market. What else is hot this week?
Battleheart
One of the most welcome iOS conversions of recent months, Battleheart set critical tongues wagging when it was released onto Apple platforms just a couple of months ago. Mika has done well to turn around an Android version so quickly considering how long we can end up waiting for conversions.
The game’s a potent mix of fantasy RPG, hack and slash and real time strategy as you manage your party of four combatants through a series of tactical battles. Battleheart gets the balance between all these disparate elements just right – and nails the visual side of things into the bargain.
Pumpkins vs Monsters
It might sound like yet another Plants vs Monsters rip-off, trying to get a piece of the market before PopCap’s real deal shows up in a week or two, but Pumpkins vs Monsters is a bit more interesting than that.
While it definitely takes a few cues from PvZ in its tone and the row-based defense premise, the way you actually defend is a bit different. The game incorporates match three mechanics, so you can line up up the pumpkins according to colour for extra effect before flicking them towards the encroaching undead. It looks good, it plays good, and it’s free. What’s not to like?
TibiaME
The TibiaME developers call the game “the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game for mobile phones.” Considering it was first released back in 2003 – more than five years before the first Android phone hit the market – we’re willing to take their word for it.
As you’d expect from such an old mobile game, the graphics are hardly cutting edge, but the game evokes memories of classic 8 and 16 bit RPGs with its bright, blocky style. This is a good thing. If you fancy a bit of simplistic old-school questing with a social bent – and for free – give this a whirl.
Bang Bang Racing THD
As the success of Reckless Racing demonstrated, there’s a place for top-down Micro Machines-style racers on touchscreen platforms. Now Bang Bang Racing THD is here to see if those with Tegra-powered Android phones in particular have a taste for tight arcade racing.
Yep, it’s another of those games that’s been cater-made for the dual-core Nvidia chip, and in this case you can see why – it’s a direct conversion from the console original. The developer has opted for a slightly unusual control system that lets you effectively draw a path for your car to follow, but if you can get on with it there’s much to admire here.
Grave Defense HD
The quest for the ultimate Android tower defence game continues, with Grave Defense HD standing as another credible contender. The gameplay will be familiar to anyone who’s played Robo Defense, HexDefense or any other game with ‘Defense’ in the title that involves the strategic placement of gun turrets.
This time you’re fighting against zombie hordes, which gives Grave Defense HD extra kudos points in these The Walking Dead-mad times. This new HD version adds sharper graphics for high-end devices, new achievements and a new survival mode. Get it while it’s cheap.
