Our Android games selection this week is one of the most eclectic yet, taking in a quirky management title, and arcade beat ‘em up, and old skool RPG and a popular casual puzzler. What’s more, this week’s E3 promised a whole bunch of exciting new titles to come. Enjoy!
Grand Prix Story
From the makers of the splendid Game Dev Story and the almost-as-spiffing Hot Springs Story comes Grand Prix Story. The premise remains the same as the previous two titles – manage a business to success – and the art style remains decidedly retro-charming. However, the subject of the game will probably have a far wider appeal than Hot Springs Story. As such, you must train drivers, acquire sponsors, develop new vehicle parts and generally act like a virtual Ross Brawn. Don’t hire that washed-up driving legend, though.
Age of Zombies
Age of Zombies developer Halfbrick was responsible for the impossibly addictive Fruit Ninja, so when it releases a new title you should really take notice. Age of Zombies couldn’t be more different, although both games delight in making things go splat. This time your target isn’t harmless fruit, but brain-hungry zombies. It takes the form of a top-down twin-stick shooter, so you move your one liner-spurting hero with one virtual analogue stick and open fire with your meaty arsenal with the other. It’s top mindless fun, and the art style is marvellous.
X-Men
Proving that side-scrolling beat ‘em ups are significantly more entertaining when the character design’s good, X-Men’s brand of mindless button mashing is lifted by the colourful superhero protagonists you get to beat heads with. Konami has done pretty well to squeeze the full 1992 arcade experience onto the small screen, though if you’re not normally a fan of virtual buttons in these situations, it’s unlikely that will change with this release. For everyone else, kicking Magneto’s backside should be top fun. If you squint, you can even imagine you’re wailing on Ian McKellan/Michael Fassbender.
Symphony of Eternity
Another nod back to early nineties gaming, Symphony of Eternity is a new title that borrows a heap of ideas from Japanese RPGs of the past. Evoking the likes of the 16 bit Final Fantasy titles, it’s packed full of adventuring and turn based battles. The plot’s pure fantasy guff, but that too makes it pretty faithful to the much-loved RPGs of yesteryear. The battle system – often the weak point of an old skool RPG – is an intuitive delight, and being able to see and avoid oncoming scraps is a welcome addition. If you’re looking for something with charm and depth in equal measure, check it out.
Burn the Rope
One of the iPhone success stories of the past six months hits Android. Burn the Rope is a fine casual puzzler in which you must guide a flame around a series of rope patterns. Your flame can only travel upwards, so you must rotate your handset to facilitate its progression. Coloured ants allow you to burn specific rope colours, while there’s a nice split mechanic that sees you juggling multiple flames simultaneously. At the time of writing you’ll have to head on over to this link to get a hold of Burn the Rope, but at least it’s free.
