Android games round-up – Robotek, Riptide GP, Contract Killer, Hyperlight …

This week’s selection of fine Android games features iPhone conversions, exclusives and games that will only work on a selection of devices. They’re also all spectacular to look at.

Robotek

Hexage is one of the finest Android-focused game developers in the business, having produced a string of imaginative and visually distinctive games like Evac and Everlands. Robotek is its latest effort and, typically, it’s completely different to the company’s previous efforts. It’s an unusual blend of turn-based strategy, action and RPG, where you must set your small army of robots against your rivals using an advanced one-arm-bandit system. It’s free to play, with optional in-app purchases acting to give you the advantage.

Riptide GP

Riptide GP’s another of those ‘Tegra 2-only’ Android games, which means owners of perfectly capable dual-core devices like the HTC Sensation and Samsung Galaxy S 2 won’t be able to play it. Still, those that can are in for a treat – Riptide is a veritable console racer from the makers of the Xbox 360 game Hydro Thunder Hurricane. That means a fast-paced futuristic jet ski racer that checks realism at the door in favour of stunt-filled mayhem. Each of the 12 visually opulent courses can be altered with interactive triggers, and there are three game modes in this generous package.

Contract Killer

Eagle-eyed readers will recall that we covered Contract Killer in one of our iPhone games round-ups just a couple of months ago. Now, Glu’s freemium action game has made its way to Android intact. You play a hired gun who must source his gear and pick his vantage point ahead of a series of hits – each of which takes the form of a tense first person shooter stand-off. As with Robotek, the basic game is free to download, but you can spend real cash on giving your virtual assassin a leg-up.

Hyperlight

The twin-stick shooter has really taken off on smartphone platforms, with PewPew and its sequel causing a neon-tinged stir on Android. Hyperlight would appear to fit into the same category, but it really is a pleasantly different experience. The main different here is you don’t shoot a thing. The idea is to guide your retro-futuristic (does that make sense?) craft around each arena by tilting your device. When you tilt your device more severely you enter FTL mode, which lets you take enemies out by barging into them. It’s an intriguing game mechanic that makes Hyperlight stand out from the crowd.

Backbreaker 2: Vengeance

This is another game that will only play on a certain type of Android device, but this time it’s got nothing to do with Tegra 2. Rather, Backbreaker 2: Vengeance is a timed Xperia Play exclusive. Eventually it’ll come to other Android devices, though, which is a good thing – the first Backbreaker remains one of the most addictive and visually impressive smartphone games around. The goal in this sequel remains to get your American football player to the endzone by dodging past waves of opposing tacklers. This time, though, you get the opportunity to turn the tables and take down the ball carrier.
