Android games round-up – Toki Tori, Nano Panda, Sacred Odyssey, Pinball HD …

We’re noticing an interesting new trend for Android games that have been optimised for Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset. Will this mean that the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and HTC Sensation will be left behind? Either way, here’s a fresh batch of fine Android games.

Pinball HD for Tegra

Last week we highlighted a game that had been optimised for Tegra 2-sporting devices. This week we go one better – Pinball HD on Android can only be played on Tegra 2 devices. This is a graphically rich 3D pinball sim featuring three themed tables – Wild West, The Deep, and Jungle Style. There’s little here that will surprise you, but Pinball HD’s strength is in the quality of the pinball physics and the slickness of the 3D engine. It really is an excellent showcase for what your Motorola Xoom (or any other Tegra 2 device) can do. There’s even a proper 3D mode, provided you’ve got the funky anaglyph 3D glasses.

Nano Panda

This kind of slick physics-based puzzler has been done to death on iPhone, but is slightly less common on Android. That makes Nano Panda more than welcome on the Google platform – especially when you consider how accomplished it is. Your goal is to rid each level of evil atoms while collecting a number of stars along the way. This is achieved by hitting each of the panda dispensers – cannons that fire miniaturised (and impossibly cute) pandas – in sequence. These pandas attract each other when loose, so timing and forethought become key.

Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden HD

Gameloft continues its habit of being, um, ‘inspired’ by leading videogame franchises with Sacred Odyssey, the latest in a recent spate of iPhone-to-Android ‘HD’ conversions. This time the subject material is culled from Nintendo’s Zelda series, which leads to an epic third person adventure with a semi-open world, plenty of real time combat and a handful of puzzle-filled dungeons. It’s slickly executed and the visuals are top-notch, but only if you have a handset that’s up to it. A reasonably recent 1GHz device is pretty much essential.

Toki Tori

Android’s full of belated iPhone conversions, but Toki Tori is one of the more welcome examples. Like a scaled town take on the classic Lemmings, you must guide your cute little chick around each fiendish level, rescuing eggs, circumventing traps and avoiding (or defeating) enemies. To do this you’re given various skills that allow you to bridge gaps and take on enemies. While it looks like a simple 2D platformer, each level uses these building blocks to form a really quite elaborate puzzler that will have you scratching your head a lot more than its cute visuals would suggest.

Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus

Modern Combat 2 marks the second of this week’s iPhone-to-Android HD conversions from those clever chaps at Gameloft. It’s the sequel to last year’s Call of Duty-aping first person shooter, featuring improved graphics and new multiplayer gameplay modes. Modern Combat 2 is special for marking the first of Gameloft’s HD series to see a release on the Android Market. First person shooters on mobile devices tend to polarise opinion, but if you have any affection for blasting things using the established twin-virtual analogue stick set-up, then Modern Combat 2 is one of the best in the business.
