Nintendo has enjoyed tremendous success thanks to the forward-thinking innovations of its DS and Wii systems, but the company’s lineup is focused squarely on the past. The publisher revealed today its first-party and third-party lineup of Wii and DS games through March of 2009, with a scattering of revamps and remakes comprising the majority of its own games.

For the Wii, Nintendo has only two releases planned, both remakes of GameCube games designed to support the Wii Remote’s motion-sensing capabilities. The self-explanatory New Play Control Mario Power Tennis and New Play Control Pikmin will both launch in March.

Nintendo’s DS lineup is a little more robust, spearheaded by the March 22 launch of Pokemon Platinum. Platinum reuses characters and settings from Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl in a franchise tradition dating back to Pokemon Yellow for the original Game Boy, a pseudosequel that incorporated elements of the previously released Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue.

Beyond Diamond, Nintendo has two more DS games planned through March. Up first will be Personal Trainer: Math on January 12, an arithmetic addition to the practical game series that started with Personal Trainer: Cooking. Those looking for something a little more gamey can try Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon on February 16. The latest release in the turn-based strategy series will be a remake of the original NES Fire Emblem (which never made it to North America), with new touch-screen controls.

Epic Games has sent out word that its Gears of War 2 Combustible Map Pack is now available for 800 Microsoft Points via Xbox Live. The pack brings three new maps to the proceedings: Flood, Gold Rush and Fuel Station.

Flood is a very tight map that’s made extra snug when the environmental hazard of Imulsion begins creeping up around the edges. As the playing field closes in, the firefight will intensify as combat is forced to the center of the map. Teams skilled at flanking their opponents will have a powerful edge.

Gold Rush takes place in an old Imulsion refinery that now serves as a hotly contested battleground. Players must survive heavy crossfire as they infiltrate the factory and navigate multiple tiers. Breakable glass allows for a clean shot at those who make a dash for the Longshot rifle while bolder players make their run for the heavy weapon. In the right hands, the Mortar can be devastating on this map, so keep those smoke grenades armed as the concussive effect comes in very handy.

Fuel Station is situated in a desolate area marked by an abandoned fossil fuel station. The team that secures and controls the station is likely to be the side that wins the match. An especially strategic location on this map is the rooftop, as there are only two points of entry – the main elevator and a staircase on the back side of the building. Heavy weaponry is situated right in front, which presents a high risk to reward ratio in this level. Lugging the Mulcher around, deploying it and revving it up can keep an entire team at bay, and unleashing hell from the rooftops is always an excellent tactic.

All of the multiplayer maps in the Combustible Map Pack are playable in the highly popular, five player co-op Horde mode.

FALLOUT 3 is the third installment in the highly acclaimed series from Bethesda.

It is set in the year 2277 and portrays a post-apocalyptic future that sees the human race draw dangerously close to extinction as the world struggles to survive the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust.

Fallout’s innovative techniques allow the exploration of a desolate Washington DC through the eyes of a gamer-defined character.

This character belongs to Vault 101, a nuclear bunker serving the American capital and lives with their widowed father until one day, they wake to discover their father has ventured out into the wasteland for untold reasons.

In an increasingly paranoid and lawless environment, reminiscent of early 20th century Eastern Europe, everyone is a suspect. With suspicion mounting, it is not long before the character is subject to accusations of betrayal.

The Vault monitor decides the character was somehow involved in the disappearance of their father . . . that perhaps they have jumped ship and are plotting against the group.

Their execution is ordered and the gamer is forced to enter the wilderness in search of their father and answers, or face certain death.

Having left the relative safety of the shelter, the player embarks on a dangerous and unpredictable journey through the barren remains of the United States.

Along the way, the player faces many critical challenges, including tyrannical and genocidal organizations familiar from the previous Fallout games.

Fresh, futuristic concepts teamed with state-of-the-art graphics help rejuvenate the Fallout series and ensure the gamer is engaged throughout.

The gamer has total freedom to explore what they want, when they want. The storyline is gripping and incorporates a variety of intricate quests that grant rewards on completion.

Fallout includes a wide range of combat tactics and weapons that give the player a real sense of warfare. It offers an outstanding combination of excitement and exploration.

However, the weapons can be quite difficult to control and gameplay is very challenging in parts.

But it is easy to see just why the series is so popular.

It’s regrettable I don’t have a full page to praise the genius of Sony’s “Little Big Planet.” The game offers a unique platforming experience while honoring some of the best side scrollers in gaming. LBP is loaded with wonderful art direction, charming characters and a fully fleshed out gaming experience unlike any you’ve played before.

Its mantra is play, create and share. Players have the opportunity play as a two-inch Sackboy or Sackgirl. The characters are fully customizable and very personable. You can decide what they look like, even down to their facial expressions.

These characters are thrown into situations to perform different tasks or solve puzzles to complete levels. Repetition is minimal, and the game feels constantly fresh. It moves at a brisk pace but gives enough time for you to soak in the astonishing graphics and action.

This game is for any age, gender, or type of gamer. It incorporates social networking features that let you share your experiences online with other players. This gives the game extraordinary depth. There is no limit to what you can create, whether it be vehicles, tricky puzzles, evil henchmen and epic boss fights.

This is simply the most creative game available on any platform right now. It’s a needed change of pace from first-person shooters and action adventure games. I really believe that this game deserves to be the crown jewel of the PS3. It’s that good.

Team Fortress fans who have been getting their fix via the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box are in for a shock: The updates coming to the PC and Xbox 360 versions of TF2 won’t be landing on Sony’s console, reports 1up.

Additionally, the monolithic console is unlikely to ever see any updates from Valve. “We don’t have PlayStation developers,” said Valve marketing head Doug Lombardi.

“They’re not doing ongoing development on The Orange Box for the PS3.”

It doesn’t seem to be a matter of disdain for the PlayStation 3, so much as a lack of resources that’s preventing Valve from showing Sony’s console the same affection they offer to Microsoft’s.

When asked about the Xbox 360 exclusive zombie shooter Left 4 Dead, Valve founder Gabe Newell told 1up that the decision to make the game an exclusive came down to a matter of not having the “bandwidth” to port the title.

“For The Orange Box, EA did the PS3 version. They’re interested in getting a PS3 version done. We just have to figure out where the resources can come from. We don’t have the bandwidth. We’re doing the 360 and PC version ourselves,” Newell said, adding that he would like to craft a PS3 version, but that will only be possible as their “bandwidth allows.”
