THQ has taken a step into the fitness genre, and has recruited a team of athletes to get video game players moving.
The publisher unveiled miCoach at an event prior to this week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
The motion-based fitness title for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 features several professional athletes, including soccer star Kaka, tennis player Ana Ivanovic, Chiefs safety Eric Berry and Magic center Dwight Howard.
In an interview with Game Hunters, Howard says miCoach’s star power could help motivate players to exercise.
“You have the opportunity to be next to your favorite star,” says Howard. “It’s not like you’re creating an avatar. It’s actually you next to your favorite star. You’re doing the workouts that they do to get better.”
The game — slated for release in 2012 in partnership with Adidas — features a series of sport-specific workouts, including basketball, football, soccer and tennis. The game will be paired with a heart rate monitor and mobile app for users to track workout data when not immersed in the game.
Howard is one of three NBA players in the game, joining Sixers guard Jrue Holiday and Hawks forward Josh Smith, each of which have their own types of routines.
“I do a lot of things that are outside the box to get myself stronger, but to maintain my strength throughout the years,” says Howard of his exercise regimen. “By doing these difference exercises and techniques, there’s a low risk of injury.”
Howard’s passion for video games goes beyond the fitness realm. Describing himself as a “big gamer,” the NBA All-Star is enjoying Call of Duty, L.A. Noire and DiRT.
“If I find myself upset about something, I turn my video game on and my mind goes into a whole ‘nother world,” says Howard.
