E3 2011: Nintendo Press Conference Guide

To video game fans around the world, three words are synonymous with gaming nirvana – the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Better known as E3, this three-day show is home to some of the biggest announcements of the year, and it’s where major publishers like Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony reveal their plans for the upcoming year.

For Nintendo fans, the highlight of E3 is usually the “Media Briefing.” Nintendo saves the biggest announcements of the year for this 60 to 90-minute presentation. This year will prove to be no exception, as the company is planning on unveiling the HD successor to Wii as well as showcase its first full year of Nintendo 3DS software.

Last Updated: April 25, 2011

Simply put, this is where Nintendo pulls back the curtain on all of its big plans for 2011 and even 2012. Console debuts, game reveals, price drops, special bundles, major deals and more tend to find their way into this presentation. If you love Nintendo, you can’t miss this.

At this point we don’t have a confirmed day or time for Nintendo’s E3 2011 press conference. However, the company has traditionally held its event the Tuesday morning before E3. That would place it on June 7, 2011.

Similar to the time and date of the conference, we don’t know what Nintendo’s plans are at this point. Last year’s “Media Briefing” was held in the Nokia Theater, just adjacent to the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Nintendo is highly secretive, and to be honest we rarely know what’s coming at the event until it’s said on stage. However, this year we do have some idea of what’s coming.

First, and foremost, is the grand unveiling of Nintendo’s Wii successor. We first reported news of the so-called “Wii 2″ console a couple weeks back, and followed up with details on the “Project Cafe” codename and the controller. We then blew the lid off Nintendo’s next console, with extensive details on the system’s hardware, original estimated release date and potential name – Stream.

Nintendo has since confirmed that it is preparing a next-gen “Wii” that will be unveiled at E3 2011. The publisher has also confirmed the system will ship in 2012 and will be playable at the show. No other details – including the name of the system – have been officially revealed by Nintendo at this point.

You can probably expect the 3DS to take up a great deal of Nintendo’s presentation. This is their new baby, the successor to the juggernaut DS platform. This is Nintendo’s shot to position the 3DS for a 2011 brawl against Apple’s iPhone 5, Sony’s NGP and whatever else might show up in the marketplace. Mario 3DS will definitely be at the show, but no doubt some surprises are in store.

You can likely add one more title to the 3DS roster – Mario Kart 3DS. In a recent event in France, Nintendo executive Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned that the popular kart racing series would make its 3D debut before the end of 2011. An E3 2011 showing would seem almost guaranteed if that’s the case.

Owners of Nintendo’s current console should have a healthy slate of titles to finish off 2011. Key among these releases is, of course, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Expect a big showing for Skyward Sword at E3. Some sort of inclusion at the press conference would seem likely.

Zelda aside, it would seem likely that Nintendo would want to spotlight a few other titles for Wii in 2011.

Yes. Nintendo loves its secrets. Some years are better than others, but considering the general mystery of Project Cafe, and that this a critical year for Nintendo 3DS, this should be one of the most exciting Nintendo press conferences in years.

That’s all we have at the moment. Stay tuned for more information as we hear it. Seven weeks might seem like an eternity, but before you (and we) know it, Reggie Fils-Aime, Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata will be on stage outlining their vision for 2011 and beyond. We’ll be there live-blogging and generally freaking out – be sure to join us.
