Who doesn’t like to get a little dirty sometimes?
Dirt 3 is Codemasters’ latest racing title for the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 and those who only have a Wii are sorely missing out.
The rally-style racing game takes gamers worldwide, visiting the twisting turns of Finland, the dryness of Kenya, and the abandoned warehouses of Michigan. Each location is beautifully designed with theming that shouts proudly where it’s from.
While games like Gran Turismo and (to a lesser degree) NFS Shift take pride in being racing simulation games, Dirt 3 doesn’t go that route. It’s very much an arcade racer and it’s best that way. Don’t let that make you think that the game is simple, however. While it’s quite accessible thanks to its different difficulty levels and built-in assists, it’s still going to keep players plenty busy and even the simple act of blinking could spell disaster for some races. But even on the most expert of settings, the player isn’t alone to figure out the well-designed and visually brilliant tracks because you have a co-pilot sitting next to your character in the passenger’s seat telling you what’s ahead.
While many games are satisfied just having players drive basically the same kinds of tracks over and over again, Dirt 3 gives players plenty to do. Between a multitude of basic single player play modes, the MyDirt career mode, and local and online multiplayer, there is more than enough to satisfy most any gamer. What’s more, players can share their experiences by uploading videos of their races directly to their YouTube account. That’s assuming, that is, you’ve activated your online pass.
Much like with EA games, this THQ-published title requires an online pass that comes included with the game when the game is bought new but comes at a premium for those who prefer to buy games second-hand. Really, the requirement of an online pass to play PSN multiplayer and upload race videos to YouTube is about the only thing keeping this otherwise masterpiece of a racing game from achieving a perfect score.
The pass aside, Dirt 3 really is as stated: a racing game masterpiece. Visually, it can rival just about any Triple-A caliber title on the PS3 and the good selection of rally cars that range in age from the 1960′s through to modern vehicles gives players a good assortment to choose from, making an already big game seem even larger and more satisfying.
