The whole hog
Could GC or any readers recommend any PC games, as I’ve just bought a powerful custom built PC. I like role-playing games but I’m willing to try anything. Also, I’ve bought a gaming keyboard and mouse which I’m waiting to come in the post it seems pretty daunting using a keyboard and mouse, I haven’t used a keyboard to play games since my Speccy days, so can GC or a reader tell me if you can use those PC control pads on most games?
Just like to add I’m not leaving my console days behind me it’s just I wanted to get my son learning the ropes on a computer so I may as well of went the full hog and got a good set up. Any recommendations would be most helpful.

GC: You can use a joypad on most PC games, but you won’t stand a chance competitively against anyone using a keyboard and mouse. As for recommendations a fairly random selection would include Total War: Shogun 2, Battlefield 3, The Orange Box, Minecraft, Sins Of A Solar Empire, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War II, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Supreme Commander, Company Of Heroes, Civilization V, Starcraft II, The Sims 3, Galactic Civilizations II, Crysis, and Football Manager. Multiformat games, particularly those like Skyrim that take advantage of user mods, often look better on PC too. As for role-playing games most of the best PC exclusive are to be found on GOG.com and Steam, particularly the Baldur’s Gate series, Planescape: Torment, and System Shock 2.
Crysis call
After purchasing Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on day of release I’ve had a bash at all three modes and thought pretty much, meh, more of the same. On Sunday I took advantage of Crysis being £7.99 on PlayStation Network. I did play Crysis 2 and enjoyed it for a while before trading it a while ago.
All I can say is, after only 30 minutes of playing Crysis – it’s head and shoulders above Call Of Duty. The whole experience just feels more solid. It’s a proper game. You have to think. Its stealth is admirable. It’s more Metal Gear Solid than a generic first person shooter.
I’m not mindlessly bashing Modern Warfare 3 – but if you’ve got £7.99 spare check it out – you should be pleasantly surprised…

Rogues and scoundrels
Thanks, GC (and others), for putting me straight on how these ‘hackers’/phishers/scoundrels make money out of what they’re doing. Due to missing the Polish auction site article, I wasn’t aware that you could transfer Points to another account and then sell that account on. What a sham.
Right, back to Skyrim. I’ve played for about 35 hours since receiving it for Christmas and am currently ‘only’ level 13. Am I levelling up particularly slowly? I’ve never played an Elder Scrolls game before. I always had some sort of distorted loyalty towards The Legend Of Zelda (even though I know they’re very different games), so just let them pass me by. I’m glad I got over that, sort of… my character is a Wood Elf called Zelda.

Nonogram-tastic
I loved Picross DS and have some Nintendo eShop money burning a hole in my pocket after buying Pullblox! I noticed Japanese gamers can download Picross E (and now Picross E 2) for the 3DS. Does GC know when this is coming to the UK eShop? There’s no excuse for the delay – it must be the easiest game to translate from Japanese – the only text is numbers!
Polarmog
GC: We don’t know but we’ve just put in a call to ask. We love Picross.
Marking time
Most people are, as myself, anticipating new games such as The Darkness II, BioShock Infinite, Mass Effect 3, etc. In the meantime playing games that I tolerate, not that they are bad but I feel I’m going on autopilot whilst waiting for the new ones.
Obviously the wait is excruciating yet satisfying, knowing soon they will be enjoyed an ‘invitation – to – treat’ so to describe it, but so unfair. GC, I really don’t know how you cope or other gamers, I simply just need therapy.

Do you have any idea whether FIFA is a launch title for PS Vita? I can’t find a definite answer anywhere. Have you had the chance to play it? It looks just like the home console version from the videos I’ve seen.

GC: The third party line-up hasn’t been confirmed yet, only the first party (i.e. Sony-published ones). We’ll see if we can get things squared for this Thursday’s release schedule update though.
Kingdoms Of Amalur is such a lame name, do they really not want ordinary people to buy it?

I see Mortal Kombat is coming to PS Vita. Let the lazy ports begin! (It’s the PSP all over again.)

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this week’s discussion was suggested by reader magicsquirrel, who asks how much you use the multimedia features of your consoles?
Inspired by
News Corp’s recent announcement of new TV, news and video content for Xbox 360, he asks whether you use your console for anything other than games – and if so what for and how much? Do you watch DVDs and/or Blu-rays on your console? Do you listen to music, browse the Web, or use non-gaming apps like YouTube, Facebook or Twitter?
How important are these features to you when buying a new console and deciding which – if you own more than one – gets the most use? Would you like to see more such features in the future or are you worried that gaming is getting sidelined by these features, and things like the new Xbox 360 dashboard?

@Tom Norgate Ive played for about 28 hours so far and im level 25 so i would say that perhaps you might be wandering around taking in the scenery a bit too much.
-
@midnightpunk. You’d have to pay me £7.99 to even consider playing crysis 2 again. the single player was average in my opinion but the multiplayer was awful, i couldn’t wait to trade it in.

RE: Tom Norgate. Surely Zelda would be a high elf? Aren’t wood elves just a bit too short?

Any more details on that Polish auction? Our dining table could do with a couple of coats.

The Yankenator – “…I may as well of went…” Really? I realise most people aren’t that bothered about it, but the use of ‘of’ instead of ‘have’ or the contraction ‘ve gets on my whick. Anyway, back to games, I occasionally get GOTY editions, but have normal editions of Skyrim (present) and Red Dead (cheap, plus didn’t fancy GOTY). Sometimes they can be worth the wait, like Oblivion (which I didn’t finish, couldn’t be bothered with the vampire cure).

One reason for buying donloaable content is that by doing so you recognize the quality of the original game. I don’t think being a game fan is a bad thing. To some extent the rip-off element about DLC’s is mitigated by the fact that your money is going to the producers and with it your encouragement for more of the same. That in a way is democratic voting. One curious thing is that the level of downloading is not being accounted for in sales charts, wouldn’t this be one way publishers could gage the gaming communities acceptance of on-line streaming?

How are you enjoying Forklift Simulator, SolidPete82?
-
I would definately add Frozen Synapse to the list of quality games for The Yankernator, really addictive classic PC type strategy game with a fun action twist.
-
@DMR So you don’t like the demo (or the series from the sound of it), but you’ll buy it if it gets good reviews? Are you a little bit crazy?
