According to VGChartz, a website that tracks the sale of video games, 2010 was a pretty decent year for video game sales, particularly on console. While the sale of PC games was pretty falt compared with 2009, the sale of games for Xbox and PS3 were up markedly: The Xbox saw a 28% increase and PS3 sales rose 37%.
Looking at statistics like that, you’d hardly know there was a recession on. Well, the economists tell us we’re officially out of our recession. That just means the economy is experience economic growth, again. It doesn’t mean you have a job, again, or, even if you do, you have one that pays as well as the one you had before this latest Wall Street con game came crashing down on the rest of America.
The unemployment rate is still abysmally high, standing at 8.8 percent, while the gap between the rich and the middle class keeps growing. Doesn’t it feel as if you have a better chance of scaling Everest, than hauling yourself up out the ranks of middle class, these days?
Everyone who doesn’t live near Wall Street or walk the halls of the Capitol seems to be hurting. So why are people still buying video games? Why do people still buy video games?
In a word, escape. In the darkest times, people want to escape their problems. The movies provided the means for that escape during the Great Depression. Times were brutally hard, but people could scrimp together the nickel or dime or two bits needed to get themselves out of the misery of the real world, if only for a couple of hours. , but that was a century ago and a couple of generations ago.
That was a century and more than a few generations ago. People have new forms of escape. When they seek escape, now, they seek it in the form of video games.
Frankly, it’s surprising video game sales didn’t go up even more, last year.
