Up until 2007, Ubisoft was providing new Ghost Recon games annually as if they were birthday presents. They never forgot your birthday. But for four years now, the Tom Clancy brand of shooters have taken a back seat and we’ve not see much of Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon since Advanced Warfighter 2 (not counting the 3DS Shadow Wars title).
Instead, Ubisoft has shifted focus to their successful Assassin’s Creed franchise which made Prince of Persia obsolete. And while we get those annually, we’ve also seen annual delays of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, the long-awaited return of the series.
If you’re tired of waiting, it gets worse. Ubisoft confirmed last night during their investors call that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will not release until the first quarter of 2012 in an effort to “avoid the very crowded Christmas landscape in the shooter genre.”
If you’ve been following the development of this game, you’ll note that this is the exact same reasoning given when the game was delayed from the end of 2010 to this year so it sounds like Ubisoft knows their big shooter won’t perform that well against against the dozen shooters debuting this year.
But what does that mean for the quality of their game? We saw it up close at E3 last year and it looked near-complete. Will they revamp the graphics and gameplay features even more so it feels like next-gen 2012 title? I’m calling it now: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is a launch title for the Nintendo Wii 2 and it’ll be confirmed at E3.
Ubisoft is an industry-leading company when it comes to supporting new consoles and tech as we saw with Kinect and the 3DS, so it’s clear they want to be part of Nintendo’s home console plans, especially if the big N is hoping to sell itself to the “hardcore” gamer market once again.
