HTC EVO 3D and LG Thrill Challenge Nintendo 3DS For 3D Glassless Supremacy

HTC Evo 3D and LG ThrillThe Nintendo 3DS handheld game console offers a glasses-free 3D experience for gamers looking for the most realistic portrayal of their favorite unrealistic video games. The term for this “no glasses needed” 3D technology is autostereoscopic, and it seems there are a couple of smartphone manufacturers that want a piece of that autostereoscopic pie. Sprint and ATT both announced plans to release glasses-free 3D smartphones this summer at the earliest.

With initial sales of the 3DS and accompanying games not quite what Nintendo was expecting, to see two of the mobile phone biggies make this announcement at virtually the same time might see odd. But mobile phone and PC manufacturers have always got to be looking for the next big thing, and there is no doubt that wearing clunky, heavy, dorky-looking glasses to enjoy 3D in TVs, PCs and games was definitely a deal killer when customers considered purchasing a 3D device. Now, Sprint is offering the autostereoscopic mobile phone experience through the HTC EVO 3D, and ATT is delivering the same capability in the LG Thrill 4G. GameLoft is one of the game developers supplying 3D titles for the phones.

As far as the phone go, the HTC EVO 3D has a powerful 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor that effectively handles the 3D delivery, and runs the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. The rear facing 5 Mp camera can record pictures in amazing 3D quality as well as record in HD and take conventional still pics, and the 1.3 Mp forward facing camera provides video chat and conferencing. The Android powered HTC EVO 3D uses the HTC Sense user interface that works so well with Gingerbread platforms to deliver a responsive, enjoyable experience every time.

The LG Thrill 4G has a 4.3 inch screen size, the same as the HTC EVO 3D, and offers the same camera setup, running instead on the Android 2.2 OS. The Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 dual core processor powers the Thrill 4G, and seems just a hair quicker than the EVO 3D, though the difference is negligible. Both phones are virtually the same size and weight, with the EVO 3D offering a slight edge in battery life.

ATT and Sprint are both raising the bar for other mobile phone manufacturers. They both offer huge, reliable networks to support the two new 3D phones, and I can’t wait for them to hit later this year. I have to wonder though, what cool abbreviation will be used for autostereoscopic?
