I Played Rhythm Heaven So Much at E3 that Nintendo Got Sick Of Me

When I heard that Nintendo was making a Rhythm Heaven game for the Wii I was ecstatic but I feared that it might not get localized.  Luckily, Nintendo announced that they were going to bring Rhythm Heaven to North America at E3 2011 and I was lucky enough to give the game a shot.

Nintendo of America did however release a Rhythm Heaven game for the Nintendo DS in 2009.  Once I started playing that game I was hooked and it looks like my addiction is going to happen all over again with Rhythm Heaven for the Wii.

Rhythm Heaven is a quirky game that is really all about Rhythm.  The game is broken up into different stages that all have a theme, such as hitting peas that fly by with a fork, chopping ghosts with a sword, or hitting a badminton shuttlecock back and forth.

At the beginning of each stage there is a brief tutorial that allows the player to get used to the different types of rhythms that will be in the stage, usually two or three different types exist.  This tutorial is also used to teach the player about the control scheme which stays very basic with most of the games just requiring the player to press the A button and nothing more.  However you’d be foolish to let this simplicity fool you.

After the tutorial the stage will begin and the music will play.  The activity the stage is based on will play out and when it comes time to complete your task the player is required to hit A (or in some cases A and B) at the correct time to complete their task.  Doing so will make a sound effect that adds to the overall music that is playing and is very satisfying.

Even though the control scheme is simple, mistakes will often happen without practice and will leave you with a general feeling that you could have done better.  This feeling is what really draws me to go back and it’s very addictive and fun.

At the end of each stage the game will rank you on your performance.  After several attempts I was able to get a perfect score on the Fork stage at E3 and was very satisfied by my performance.

I found myself coming back to this game many times at the event and I think the people demonstrating the game in Nintendo’s booth were getting sick of me, but my Rhythm Heaven addiction had kicked in and nothing was going to stop me.

I think that Rhythm Heaven will be a sleeper hit for those unfamiliar with the title and I am calling it a MUST OWN Wii title.  This game concept is simple but the cool music and addictive nature of the game will keep calling you back to do better.  Rhythm Heaven can’t hit store shelves soon enough!
