iPhone games round-up – Gears, Zenonia 3, Elemental Rage, Snuggle Truck …

Anyone getting bored of these four-day Bank Holidays yet? Nope, us either. Especially when we get to idle away the hours sat on a beach with our iPhones, playing these brilliant games.

Gears

The rolling ball genre has proved very popular on iPhone. The simple pleasure of guiding a ball around a maze seems to sit well on the platform – especially if you have the gyro-equipped iPhone 4. Few developers have nailed it as well as Crescent Moon Games with Gears, though. It looks absolutely spectacular, with Retina display-optimised 3D graphics filling the screen and creating a real sense of place. The controls and gameplay are a joy, too, as you guide your ball across cogs, bridges, and various other precarious surfaces.

Zenonia 3

The Zenonia series is well known and much loved for bringing the classic action-RPG to iPhone. Zenonia 3 is more of the same, with a familiar blend of 2D adventuring, button-mashing combat and levelling up. While it looks like a clone of Nintendo’s Zelda series (thanks to some familiar anime-inspired visuals), Zenonia 3 differentiates itself through a heavy dose of character customisation. As your character levels up you need to direct his burgeoning talents. There are even a couple of multiplayer modes to add to the sprawling single player campaign.

Elemental Rage

A fun platform-adventure in the style of the classic Castlevania series, Elemental Rage is all about unlocking new abilities for your 12-year-old protagonist and using them to progress through the cavernous levels. There’s a slightly quirky, offbeat feel to the story that makes the game stand out against similar titles, and the graphics have an attractive sharp-edged simpleness to them that calls to mind Saturday morning cartoons. For a gently engrossing adventure game, look no further.

Snuggle Truck

The story behind Snuggle Truck’s creation is almost as fun as the game itself. Initially called Smuggle Truck, Apple took exception to the theme of the game (smuggling Mexican immigrants across the US border) and rejected it. One quick bout of photoshopping later and we have Snuggle Truck, wherein you must help a bunch of stuffed animals to a better life in a zoo. It doesn’t matter what you’re transporting really – the 2D physics-based gameplay is an absolute hoot whichever way you cut it.

Unpleasant Horse

Another game that fell pray to Apple’s approval process, Unpleasant Horse sees you playing the role of the titular antisocial equine in a get-as-far-as-you-can highscore attack. Your dark horsey will jump from cloud to cloud, but you must use up a finite supply of feathers to prolong your flight when no clouds are around. These can be replenished by smacking into birds. The unpleasantness comes from the ability to land on other horses’ backs and force them to the ground for bonus points. Simple, mean-spirited fun.
