iPhone games round-up – Storm in a Teacup, Prince Penny, Chaos Rings Omega …

My, what a strong week of iPhone games we’ve had. We’ve seen some truly stunning releases this week, a couple of which sport almost console-like 3D visuals and the rest of which are just plain charming. Read on to find out more.

Storm in a Teacup

We’ve been looking forward to this one ever since Chillingo released a video of it in action. Storm in a Teacup could loosely be defined as a 2D platformer, but it’s the floatiest, most psychedelic example of such that you’re ever likely to play. The idea is to swoop through each fairytale level, collecting sugar lumps (you’re in a teacup, y’see), avoiding enemies and solving simple physics-based puzzles. The art style’s beautiful – especially on the iPhone 4′s Retina display – and some of the level design is ingenious. Buy it.

Prince Penny

This one’s a simple high score-chasing run-and-collect game, but it’s been given a nice twist in the shape of some lovely chunky 3D graphics. You look over the protagonist’s should as he scoots along in his chariot, dodging left and right to collect a snaking line of coins. It’s pretty straight forward stuff, and you’ve doubtless played plenty of games like this before, but few would have been set in a vibrant world that looks like it’s been lifted from an early Sega Dreamcast game. That’s a good thing, in case you were wondering.

Chaos Rings Omega

The original Chaos Rings caused quite a stir not only because of its premium price point, but because it largely justified this cost by offering a rich console-like RPG. Again, Chaos Rings Omega isn’t cheap at £6.99, but it does offer another slice of high-quality Japanese RPG action from the masters of the form, Square Enix. We’d recommend checking out the first game to see if this kind of thing agrees with you (it’s on sale at the time of writing), but if you like the recent Final Fantasy console games you’ll doubtless love this.

Bumpy Road

Something must be in the water this week – Bumpy Road is another charming yet simple game with a top class art style. “A couple in their autumn years have decided to go for a ride in their car just like in the old days,” the story goes, and it’s up to you to help them collect their memories. This is achieved by touching the road in front, behind and underneath them to make it bulge, thus guiding the oldsters and even launching them into the air where necessary. It’s a fresh approach to the perpetual runner genre, and it looks absolutely great.

Casey’s Contraptions

We’ll round off this particularly playful batch of iPhone games with the most gleefully experimental of the lot. It’s another of those physics-based games that sees you setting off a domino-rally effect with a bunch of hilariously over-engineered Rube Goldberg machines. Something as simple as popping a balloon can involve a gloriously elaborate array of objects, from scissors and ropes to toy trucks and darts. It’s all got a lovely sandbox feel to it despite the straight-forward objectives. Oh, and like all the other games this week, it looks gorgeous.
