Bank Holiday weekends are great, but you just know you’re going to spend a good portion of your time sat in a car, on a plane or on a train. Let us take the sting out of those interminably dull periods with some prime iPhone game recommendations.
Superbrothers: Sword Sworcery EP Micro
We’ve spoken about Superbrothers before. This beautiful and strange adventure game made quite an impression when it debuted on iPad a month ago. Now it’s on iPhone, and it appears to be just as good (but a little smaller, obviously). As much an experience as a game, the idea is to absorb yourself in a retro-influenced fantasy world, solving puzzles, engaging in the odd battle and soaking in the gorgeous visuals and music. The perfect way to transport yourself away from the motorway traffic jam you’ll inevitably find yourself in over the coming weeks.
Streets of Rage 2
This takes us back. We reckon Streets of Rage 2 on the MegaDrive is the finest 2D scrolling beat ‘em up ever. Unlike other similar games, it keeps the core button-mashing action interesting by throwing a wide variety of enemies, bosses and scenarios your way. The controls, while easy to comprehend (punch, jump and special attack) hide a surprisingly deep combat system that rewards experimentation. This iPhone version isn’t perfect (the virtual controls obscure a lot of the screen) but there’s plenty of fun to be had – particularly with the Bluetooth multiplayer mode.
Air Penguin
Gamevil is more commonly known for its RPG-inflected adventure and sports games, but Air Penguin shows an altogether different side to them. This is firmly in the bright, cheerful, instant-fun category of games. The idea is to guide your bouncing penguin between clumps of solid ice, tilting your handset to steer it around snapping sharks and other obstacles. There’s a surprising level of variety here too, with frequent grounded detours thrown in for good measure. A fine little time-filler with a lovely art style.
Coin Drop
Have you ever played Peggle? PopCap’s casual hybrid of pinball and pachinko has won over a lot of fans with its fine balance between luck, skill, luck, flashy rewards and a little more luck for good measure. There have been a few low-key cracks at replicating the formula, but Coin Drop is one of the best efforts yet. While it sticks to the basic Peggle premise of dropping round objects through a series of bouncy pins, the levels here are far more extreme, with plenty of physics-based demolition thrown in.
Third Blade
While Third Blade can’t match up to the timeless majesty of Streets of Rage 2, it’s still another entertaining 2D brawler (if you like this kind of thing). This time the emphasis is on whopping great combos and RPG – style hit points as you run from left to right, hammering the virtual attack button. It’s all helped along by some sharp OTT anime-influenced graphics. Style over substance? Yep, but we can’t deny it’s good mindless fun nonetheless.
