Nintendo Wii 2 won’t ditch buttons or D-pad

We’ve been hearing a great deal about the successor to the Wii lately.

Nintendo’s console sequel will be out next year, and will be shown in playable form at E3, just over a month away in June.

While there are no official hardware specification details yet, there has been much speculation about HD graphics and triple-core processors. And indeed a controller with a 6 inch touchscreen.

Fear not, however, if you think that the Wii 2 is going to cast away the traditional buttons in favour of a purely touch-based control set. Like the 3DS, which has a touchscreen for control in some games, it is going to keep the usual face buttons and D-pad.

Kotaku reports that Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told an analyst: “Whenever we make a new game console, we’ve done it without throwing away buttons and the directional pad. The reason for that [is] it’s better to have them, because buttons and directional pads benefit gameplay response.”

“Taking this into account, Nintendo isn’t planning on completely ditching buttons, nor is Nintendo thinking of taking tablets as they are today and implementing them in a game console.”

So, the company kept the buttons and pad for the Wii Remote, and will do so for the Wii 2. However, as the rumours go, there may be a touchscreen on board the controller as well.

That might not be as intuitive as the 3DS’s touchscreen, which is sat right there below the main display, as opposed to the player having to look away from the TV and down at the controller-based touchscreen. However, it should add some interesting possibilities to local multiplayer games in terms of keeping things hidden.
