By the end of the year, Nintendo’s new console, referred to as “Project Cafe,” could see the light of day. IGN has reported the starting price for the console to sit between $350 and $400, which might seem steep for many gamers. To give gamers the bang for their buck though, Nintendo is reportedly adding some huge features to the “Wii 2.”
Apparently, the console will be roughly the size of the first Xbox 360, but it will be packed with powerful technology. The device will be able to achieve 1080p (think high definition). A GPU, CPU, and processor will combine to make it possible that the device could produce better visuals than the Xbox 360 and PS3. Of course, that would be a huge improvement over the Nintendo Wii.
Although the Nintendo Wii outsold the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 for years after it was released, Nintendo is seeing decreased sales for its current generation console. There have been a few complaints about the Wii over the years too. For instance, the console doesn’t appeal to hardcore gamers, doesn’t support HD, and it doesn’t get some of the best games from the other two consoles.
Nintendo isn’t stopping at the console either – reportedly. In fact, the company just might be redesigning its controller completely from the Wii. Project Cafe is supposedly going to feature a new controller that is more similar to the controllers from Microsoft and Sony. The controller, however, is supposed to support a camera and a touchscreen, but little information is set in stone about what those two features would be used for. With such additions, there’s no telling how big such a controller would be.
Unfortunately, Nintendo might be making a huge mistake with its planned next generation console. The PS3 and 360 are both hardcore gaming havens, which the Wii has never been. On top of that, both Sony and Microsoft have been increasing their lineups of family-friendly offerings – further taking away from Nintendo’s main demographic. That means that the next Nintendo console could end up appealing to very few people, making it an overpriced and under-bought device like the Playstation 3 was during the first couple years of its release.
Still, Project Cafe could reinvigorate Nintendo’s gaming offerings. The Nintendo 3DS was recently released to positive reviews and sales of almost half a million devices in its first few days of release. Rumors are very few and far when it comes to adding 3D capabilities to the next Nintedo console, but the possibility is there. Recently, 3D has proven to be a big draw in some cases. Blending the 3DS with the “Wii 2″ could entice many gamers to buy the console. Therefore, if the Nintendo 3DS handheld could get customers to pay almost $300 for the device, then maybe gamers are prepared to pay almost $400 for the next generation Nintendo console.
