Nintendo pushing "play" on new DS console
TOKYO (Hollywood Reporter) – Nintendo plans to release a new model of its portable DS gaming console with a camera, music player and high-speed WiFi capabilities by the end of 2008.
The new model would go on sale for less than 20,000 yen ($185), Japan’s leading business newspaper, The Nikkei, said Sunday.
Nintendo spokesperson Yasuhiro Minagawa said that the Kyoto-based company is “always trying to surprise people and expand the gaming market, but would not confirm details about any new model.
Although the DS already is the best-selling portable console ever — with 80 million units worldwide — and looks likely to beat the 100 million-unit console record set by Sony’s PlayStation 2, the DS has, in the past six months, been outsold by the PlayStation Portable in Japan.
