Currently on day… I think 10 at this point and the PlayStation Network and Qriocity servers are still down leaving millions of customers without their favorite online games and online services. Sony had a press conference today at 1AM EDT / 12PM in Japan to explain what they are doing to fix the network.
Currently Sony is still guessing how hackers were able to access the network but are leaning towards access to an “application server.” It looks like people have begun to lose their jobs as Sony has announced a new Chief Security Officer will take the reigns at the new data center where the PlayStation Network and Qriocity servers are being moved to. Alongside the physical move and replacement of the Chief Security Officer, Sony plans to add more firewalls and a new firmware update for the PS3 which will require all passwords to be changed. Moving forward, PlayStation Network passwords can only be changed on the device the service was started on or through a verified email address.
In terms of credit cards numbers that may have been stolen, Sony still says that they have no data to suggest that credit card numbers were stolen nor have they received any reports any fraud. That being said Kaz Hirai did advise consumers to “be vigilant” and check their credit card statements to make sure. If users have found any indication of fraud Sony has said that they are still considering covering the costs of credit card replacement.
Once the PlayStation Network is back online, Sony is offering users free downloads of selected content, 30 days of free PlayStation Network Plus for new and existing customers. Current Qriocity members will also get 30 days of free service.
Sony mentioned that even though “Anonymous” has attacked Sony several times over the last few months there is currently no connection to the latest attack. Good news is that PSN service should be restored “soon”…whatever that means.
