Razer Hydra brings motion control to PC games

Razer today announced the release of the Hydra, Razer’s new PC motion controller powered by Sixense technology. Best of all, the Razer Hydra is being bundled with Portal 2 as well as six additional levels exclusive to the Hydra bundle.

In addition to Portal 2, the Razer Hydra is designed to work out of the box with Left 4 Dead 2, World of Goo, and more than 125 other titles. (Razer showcased an early version of the Hydra with Left 4 Dead 2 at E3 2009.) In addition, the Hydra enables you to download game configurations and create profiles for existing games, so you shouldn’t (generally) have to wait for patches, drivers, or other software to make the Hydra work with existing games not designed for motion controllers.

According to Razer, the Hydra is capable of precise one-to-one tracking to the exact millimeter and degree. In addition, the Hydra controller doesn’t require line-of-sight with its base station to work–which is probably a good thing, because the base station’s “feature” of a “low power magnetic field” might mean it’s best not to place it near body, head, crotch, or tiny robots anyway.

We’ll just hope it has Aperture Science’s safety seal of approval. (Writer’s note: Is it just me or does the Hydra base station look suspiciously like an Aperture Science Personality Core?

The Razer Hydra will cost $139.99 and include a full version of Portal 2 plus the added content. Pre-orders for the Razer Hydra begin May 2011 through Razer’s Web site, with shipments scheduled to begin in June 2011.
