Starwatch consumer | Sony says stolen PlayStation data

Sony told PlayStation Network users that it had encrypted the credit card data that hackers may have stolen, reducing the chances that thieves could use the information. Sony said that while it had no direct evidence the information was even taken, it can’t rule out the possibility. It did not say how strong the encryption was.

Limiting youth marketing

The Obama administration has asked food companies and restaurants to cut back on advertising unhealthy foods to children. Under guidelines obtained by The Associated Press, companies would be urged only to market foods to children ages 2 through 17 if they are low in fats, sugars and sodium and contain specified healthy ingredients.

Price check on that shotgun

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is bringing back rifles and shotguns to about 500 U.S. Walmart stores, mostly in rural areas, to broaden the product assortment as part of an attempt to make its outlets one-stop shopping destinations. Walmart already carries hunting weapons in more than 1,000 of its about 3,600 namesake locations.

Mortgage rates fall

Fixed mortgage rates dipped this week, with the rate on the 30-year loan staying under 5 percent and the 15-year loan falling below 4 percent. Freddie Mac said the average rate on the 30-year loan fell to 4.78 percent from 4.80 percent the previous week. The average rate on the 15-year fixed mortgage slipped to 3.97 percent from 4.02 percent.

Panel endorses hepatitis drug

Federal health experts say an experimental hepatitis C drug from Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. is a significant step forward in treating the virus, despite a high rate of rashes among patients taking it. The Food and Drug Administration’s panel of experts voted unanimously, 18-0, that telaprevir is a safe and effective treatment for hepatitis C. A final decision is expected by May 23.

Cheaper eye drug called effective

A study published Thursday by the New England Journal of Medicine shows that a cheaper drug for patients with wet macular degeneration is as effective as a more expensive one approved for the condition. The study found that vision improvement was the same among patients given monthly shots of Avastin or Lucentis for one year.
