Wii bowlers from Belmont Village and the Goebel Senior Adult Center are joining forces to build a league with plans to compete at a countywide Wii tournament in the fall.
“My end result is to put a league together so we have teams where we can actually compete against each other,” said Michael Kaufman, 68, of Ventura, the Wii bowling coordinator at the Goebel in Thousand Oaks. That league would have its own tournament before the county tournament in October.
On a recent Monday, Wii bowlers from both facilities practiced together for the first time at Belmont Village of Thousand Oaks.
“I hope that several teams form within the group,” said Cindy Carbee, Belmont Village’s activity program coordinator.
The teams will gather from 1 to 3 p.m. on Mondays, alternating between Belmont Village and the Goebel.
“This is the perfect opportunity to participate in a sport that many may have given up because of the physical limitations of aging,” Carbee said. “Like anything else, you may hit more gutter balls than strikes to begin, but practice will ultimately prevail on everyone’s game.”
“This is the perfect time to make new memories and try something different,” Carbee added. “And when the balls curve into the gutter, just like in regular bowling, we all laugh together because we know that starting slow is how you learn.”
JoAnne Getman, 83, got a high score of 237 recently.
“It was fun,” said the Thousand Oaks resident, who started Wii bowling in 2009. “It’s great for people that love to bowl at a regular alley but has a hard time getting there.”
Last year’s senior Wii bowling tournament took place at the Pleasant Valley Senior Center in Camarillo. The October event drew teams from senior centers in Simi Valley, Oxnard, Camarillo and Ojai. The winners were the Simi Valley Strykers from the Simi Valley Senior Center.
Kaufman hopes to form at least two teams.
“We’d love to draw (seniors) from other places so when the yearly tournament takes place in October we can compete with two different teams bowling,” he said.
Said Getman: “Us older people forget how to laugh and have fun. This is a way to forget pains and aches we all have … and enjoy our lives.”
For more information on the teams, call Belmont Village of Thousand Oaks at 496-9301 or the Goebel Senior Adult Center at 381-2744 and ask for Kaufman.
