Top 5 PC Picks for 2012

PC gaming seems to have struggled over the past year with not many high-profile games hitting the market (Aside from Skyrim!). With all the talk of piracy getting in the way and the unfortunate DRM’s that Ubisoft and other publishers seem to push on their PC games makes it difficult to enjoy a decent PC gaming experience. We had some highlights such as Portal 2 to keep us busy but that can only hold you over for so long and unfortunately it ends. You could say that last year the PC turned into a glorified Xbox 360 just without the struggles of frame-rate, anti-aliasing or draw distance. Looking ahead to 2012 we see there is a lot to look forward to this year with some big titles hitting the platform making it all the while to beef up your setups to hit these games at their highest settings. Here are my top 5 picks for PC games of 2012.

5) Diablo 3

It’s coming folks; the game has been in development forever and you can certainly understand why Blizzard and company take its sweet time to develop its most precious franchise. The quality and care that Blizzard takes to its games will certainly pay off when launch time arrives and you’ll find yourself trapped into your computer and finding it hard to get away even though you have work the next morning. It’s hard to describe how Diablo 3 has been shaping up lately with its seamless gameplay and expert attention to detail. While it must take a considerable amount development time to bring you such a high quality product, you certainly can’t argue with the results.

4) Quantum Conundrum

This is the latest title from one of the original lead designers on Portal, Kim Swift; Quantum Conundrum is a new title that takes puzzles in a different direction. It has similar features as like Portal it’s a first-person puzzle platformer. You play as a kid dropped off at his uncle’s home-turned laboratory and it the mad Professor Quadwrangle. You learn that the Professor has gone missing and it’s your mission to find him. You are then given a glove called the Inter-Dimensional Shift Device, which allows you to shift dimensions depending on the room you are currently in to help you complete puzzles and more forward through the game. While the game is multiplatform, I believe that like Portal the game is best played on a PC to see its full potential.

3) Metro:  Last Light

2009’s Metro: 2033 seemed to push modern PCs to the limit if you even wanted a shot at playing the game at its highest settings. I wouldn’t be surprised if Last Light continues the tradition and brings us a game complete with a great atmosphere, art design and high quality story. It’s been a long time coming for Last Light so we can only hope that this development time will be able to provide gamers with a great single-player experience.

2) Counter Strike: Global Offensive

Counter Strike continues to be one of the most played multiplayer games for Valve. Their newest project on hand is a new addition to the series, Global Offensive. It’s a game that keeps everything that made Counter Strike great. If you were in anyway involved with Counter Strike since the beginning then you’ll be sure to get your hands on this title. It doesn’t look to reinvent the wheel, be a reboot, or even change anything to its original formula. If you’re looking for a different shooter then the mad rabid gamers on Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3 then you are going to appreciate what the Counter Strike series will have to offer with Global Offensive and its nostalgic value for old school shooter fans.

1) Dishonored

It’s a brand new title coming from Arkane Studios and looks to offer you a rich new and varied world to explore. If you are out of the loop as to what Arkane Studios brings to the table they are taking note from their previous titles; Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and also look to be taking inspiration from Bioshock as well. With some members from development teams of the likes of Deus Ex and Half Life 2, this looks to become a gem when it finally launches and will certainly make any Bioshock fan feel at home.
