WildTangent and what might possibly be ATT-Mobile soon but is still just T-Mobile, are working on a Google Android gaming service for the mobile carriers network. I guess a standard Google App store just wasnt enough for them and so theyre going their own way to fragment the industry and to increase their own monetization.
WildTangent is announcing today that it plans to launch an Android games service with T-Mobile USA, Inc. later this year that uniquely maximizes monetization for developers and gives T-Mobile customers new choices on Android-powered smartphones and tablets.
With the new service on Android smartphones and tablets, T-Mobile customers will have the opportunity to more easily discover, try and enjoy top games of all types hassle-free. Players will have the choice to play games for free with advertising, rent games for a fraction of the suggested retail price and purchase the must-have titles they want to keep. The cost of the rental will be applied toward purchase so customers can easily own games if they play them often.
WildTangent will offer its popular WildCoins virtual currency within the service for in-game item purchase and rental. WildTangent’s BrandBoost advertising platform will also be incorporated, providing consumers with free game sessions and in-game items.
This is sort of where the industry is heading. The old download demo, play demo, buy game, download full game business model is evaporating quick and in its place is this crust that is adver-gaming where you can play games with ads and some limited features and then if you like it just pay to unlock the rest of the content and get rid of the ads. Im not against it in any way, I think its a very good way to go. Plus, it gets devs and publishers some extra income while people are playing in the non-full-featured versions of the games.
